PRESS RELEASE
15 mars 2011 Toward a new monarchist uprising in the Northern Yemen ?
From its correspondent in Ryad, the international Monarchist Conference just heard that last 15 of March the city of Jouf, capital of the Al-Jouf Province in the North of Yemen, have been the scene of violent fighting. This province was until the end of the sixties a stronghold for the monarchist resistance during the civil war against republican forces.
23 of February, Abdul Malik Al-Houthi, one of the leader of the monarchist opposition (Zaydist) has called all his supporters, mainly in the North of the country, to join the democratic opposition to President Ali Abdallah Saled in a “Joint Meeting parties”.
It seems that the events in Yemen are taking another path with the violent revival of the Monarchist opposition in the political scene. Two days ago, thousands of protesters have gathered in the cities of Marib and Jouf, many of them were wearing the red color, symbol of the Yemen monarchy.
Those protests have led to violent infightings and the death of the governor of Marib, Naji bin Ali al-Zaida. One monarchist protester has also been killed by the police force, leading to a general uprising in the city. According to our sources, the commanding officer of the security forces of Al-Jouf, Abdul-Ghani al-Eliyan has been killed during the infightings along with two of his soldiers. The monarchists have taken over the local siege of the government forces. We do not have any update regarding the current situation there.
If the International Monarchist Conference does not support violence, we strongly acknowledge that this insurrection is the direct result of the refusal of president Saleh to negotiate with his growing opposition, and also of the long ostracism and disdain by the Yemen government toward the Northern provinces, loyal to the Monarchy.
It is time to the Yemen government to open negotiation with all the opposing parties, if not the situation will rapidly turn into a civil war.
